Special Showing – One Day Only

Galen Wolf (1889-1976)

CattleRanchMartinsBeachMore than 50 pieces of art by Galen Wolf will be on display during this one-day show. An accomplished storyteller as well as a talented artist, his knowledge of the Coastside's history was acquired firsthand, through his own experiences and those of his family and friends. Galen painted the California Missions in the 1930s, worked as a WPA artist in the early 40s, and developed a unique style of painting he called "mosaic" in the 1950s. He was a founding member of Thirty and One Artists, the Society of Western Artists, and, more locally, the Spanishtown Historical Society.

5:00 – 6:45 pm: Refreshments and Book Signing

Copies of Legends of the Coastland, reprints of the booklets, The Town That Was, Coastland, and 1885 will be available for purchase. In addition, a limited number of original paintings will be for sale.

7 pm: Slideshow and Short Lecture

Shannon Nottestad will show a selection of images from her personal collection of Galen Wolf’s art, which includes works in watercolor, oil, pastel, and gouache, and spans the years 1905-1975. The paintings demonstrate how the artist's signature evolved over the decades, and the challenges involved in dating his work. There will be time for questions and comments after the slideshow.

About Shannon NottestadbookcoverNet

Shannon has lived on the Coastside since 1969, and currently resides in in Half Moon Bay. She began collecting Galen Wolf's paintings in 1998 and researching his life and art the following year. Since 2005 she has been preserving and archiving a collection of Wolf's paintings, writings, and artifacts that belonged to the artist's late daughter, Ressa Fairbanks. After Shannon retired from a career as a library paraprofessional in 2008, she reprinted Wolf's local history booklets, The Town That Was, Coastland, and 1885. In 2012, she published Legends of the Coastland, a folkloric history of the San Mateo County Coast written and illustrated by Galen Wolf.
