Speaker Series: Tugboat Captain Jan Tiura

Description
The Art of Tugging Against the Tide
Fifty years ago there were no women working aboard tugboats in San Francisco Bay. Jan Tiura didn’t know that but if she had, it wouldn’t have stopped her from trying to get aboard. A blue water sailor, she knew that that was what she wanted to do. As with many things in her early life, if her compass swung to “can’t not” then, come hell or high water, she was going to make it happen!
Jan will talk about her professional maritime career, deckhand to captain, aboard tugboats as well as her years of skippering the presidential yacht USS POTOMAC, FDR’s floating White House.
Illustrating her talk with striking photos which will transport you to the heart of the Bay.
Pre-Talk in the Galley from 6-7 PM
Conversation with the legendary Bob Dooley, a local professional fisherman who worked in the Bering Sea for decades.
